Ronald Donkor named in MLS Team of the Week after starring in NY Red Bulls thriller

Ghanaian midfielder Ronald Donkor has been named in the Major League Soccer Team of the Week for Matchday 9 after producing a sensational display in New York Red Bulls’ dramatic 4-4 draw against DC United.

The 21-year-old was at the heart of everything positive for the Red Bulls on a thrilling night at Sports Illustrated Stadium, registering a goal and two assists in one of the standout individual performances of the weekend.

Donkor made his presence felt early in the contest when he brilliantly set up Julian Zakrzewski for the opening goal in the 15th minute.

Just six minutes later, the Ghanaian got on the scoresheet himself, finishing calmly to double the hosts’ advantage and put them firmly in control.

Despite DC United pulling one back before the break through Tai Baribo, Donkor continued to dictate proceedings after halftime.

With the game finely poised at 3-3 following strikes from Jorge Ruvalcaba, Jackson Hopkins and another effort from Baribo, the Ghanaian midfielder once again stepped up.

He delivered a clever through pass to Ruvalcaba, who restored the Red Bulls’ lead at 4-3 and looked to have secured all three points.

However, Baribo completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute to rescue a point for the visitors.

Although New York Red Bulls were denied victory, Donkor’s exceptional contribution did not go unnoticed, earning him a deserved place in the MLS Team of the Week for Matchday 9.
