MANILA, Philippines—Add another name to the Gilas Pilipinas roster that will take on two visiting nations in the Fiba World Cup Asian Qualifiers this week.
Roger Pogoy has ruled himself out of the home stands against Lebanon and Jordan after injuring his right ankle in the game against Meralco last Friday night.
“It still hurts. They say it’s a wounded bone,” shooter Tropang Giga told reporters in Filipino shortly after the club escaped San Miguel 105-103 at the PhisSports Arena in Pasig City.
“The pain is not from swelling, but from inside the bone. So I really need to rest and this will prevent me from leaving Gilas this week,” he said.
Pogoy’s absence is yet another blow to a National Team pool that has been fatigued by a lack of front-line options. Kai Sotto has opted out of the games against Lebanon and Jordan, while Japeth Aguilar is also injured.
Without the die-hard Cebuano, Chot Reyes’ options for the two-guard spot are now reduced to Japan-based standouts Ray Parks Jr. and Jordan Heading, along with amateurs Francis Lopez and Schonny Winston.
“It’s really nice to play in the home field,” Pogoy said. “(Gilas’) last game was against Jordan. Our game against Saudi Arabia (in Jeddah) felt the same [our turf]also.”
“But it’s great to play here, on the home field.”
