Riots: The crimes of some UG students cannot continue – Gyampo

A professor at the University of Ghana, Ransford Gyampo condemned the university students who resorted to violence on Tuesday, February 14.

Prof Gyampo said on TV3’s Ghana Tonight show on Tuesday, February 14, that the students should not be allowed to continue their illegal activities.

“There are those who say that the court has given an order that they will implement it, this is an act of disrespect,” he said.

Following the disruption, the Police said security has been beefed up at the University of Ghana campus for academic activities to continue without hindrance.

Earlier, the Accra High court injuncted the housing policy decisions by the University after some frustrated students from Commonwealth Hall on January 6, 2023, filed a lawsuit against the university to direct students to find accommodation outside the campus.

Some students on Tuesday February 14 clashed with the police to try to occupy the residence hall after the court decision.

Police arrested 18 people for the disturbance.

The 18 suspects are along with around 200 others who are believed to be former members of the university’s Commonwealth Council.

The police have been able to control the situation and peace has been restored.

All 18 suspects are in Police custody and will be produced in court for trial.

Security on campus has been deepened so that academic activities can continue without any hindrance.

“We would like to give assurance that all other people involved in the disturbances will be arrested and brought to face justice,” said the Police in a statement.
