Speaking in general, doctors say many middle-aged women have difficulty losing weight due to hormonal changes – despite a healthy lifestyle.
“Menopause comes with many health complications. There is a higher risk for Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia – and if you add to the mix being overweight or obese, then we increase the risk of disease for the patient,” said the doctor.
“Entering menopause (at) a healthy weight greatly prevents the long-term complications of aging and weight gain and menopause,” added Salas-Whalen. “A lot of middle-aged women benefit from this drug because they can’t control it.”
The doctor said, “No one can assume just by looking at someone that they don’t need it or are doing it for the wrong reasons.”
Dr. Salas-Whalen suggested the backlash after Dolores’ statement is due to society’s emphasis on losing weight to look, rather than being healthy.
“It’s our own misunderstanding of how people look and what that means,” Salas-Whalen said. “Weight loss is complex. (It’s) not just a number on a scale that goes down.
