Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) announced her candidacy for the Senate on Tuesday, officially kicking off what is expected to be a crowded 2024 primary to fill California’s unvacated seat.
Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, 89, is up for reelection this year, but California’s longest-serving senator has not announced whether she plans to seek another term.
“I don’t do Congress the way other people often do. I use whatever power I have to tell the truth about their power,” Porter said in a video announcing his bid for the Senate.
The two-term progressive representative from Orange County cited job roasting executives from Wall Street, Big Pharma and the oil and gas industry as reasons for withdrawing from the candidacy.
“To win this fight, it’s time for new leadership in the US Senate,” said Porter.
