The Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye (MP) expressed optimism that the implementation of the new National Rental Assistance Scheme (NRAS) is intended to support deserving households, especially the youth to access decent rental accommodation and effectively protect them from unwanted exploitation from homeowners will go a long way to reducing the current housing deficit of 1.8 million housing units.
The scheme, the sector Minister noted, was introduced in response to the growing public outcry over rent payments that have been going on for years, which has been a major challenge for the majority of Ghanaians, especially those living in urban areas. He urged Ghanaians to join the government in sensitizing the public about the Scheme, adding that eligible Ghanaians can apply by logging on to www.nras.gov.gh.
Delivering the keynote address at the commissioning of phase 1 of the SUCASA O’GRANTSON housing community in Accra, Asenso-Boakye indicated that the current housing deficit requires interventions and mechanisms that focus on people to ensure that not only rental accommodation is accessible but also affordable for households that worthy, adding that this will be essential to effectively protect middle income earners from undue exploitation by landlords while delivering the necessary housing infrastructure and services to residents.
Explaining the other mechanisms adopted to provide the necessary infrastructure to overcome the housing deficit, Asenso-Boakye stated that the strategy adopted by the Ministry is to use the resources, experience and expertise of the private sector while the government provides the desired environment to attract private sector investment into the housing sector . .
“The ministry is constantly engaged with natives, as well as foreign partners and developers, on the possibility of collaboration to reduce the housing deficit, creating opportunities to promote growth and continuous development in the construction and housing industry.” Minister added.
Highlighting some of the initiatives taken by the Government to transform the housing industry, Asenso-Boakye stated that one of the Ministry’s focus is to review and implement legislation that will address institutional gaps and create a suitable platform for best practices. .
He mentioned the Ministry’s intention to establish the Ghana Housing Authority to manage, plan and manage housing developments in collaboration with private sector developers.
