Doctors described Damar Hamlin’s neurological function as “excellent” on Friday, as the Buffalo Bills safety continued to make progress in his recovery after having to be resuscitated on the field in the game in Cincinnati on Friday.
In providing daily updates on Hamlin, Bills said the player continues to breathe on his own but remains in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Hamlin took a big step toward recovery Friday when he was taken off the ventilator and showed the ability to speak.
The 24-year-old also made a live video conference appearance on Friday for his teammates, making a few autographs and saying, “Love you guys.”
Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and his heart stopped Monday night after making what appeared to be a routine play in the first quarter against the Bengals. The game was initially delayed before being officially canceled later in the week.
The Bills plan to pay tribute to Hamlin and the first responders and medical staff who treated the player when they close out the season Sunday by hosting the New England Patriots in Orchard Park, NY.

Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin is once again breathing on his own and even talking to friends, after suffering a heart attack earlier this week during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals football team.
The NFL will also show support for Hamlin during all of the Week 18 games, which begin Saturday afternoon, including pre-game support, painting Hamlin’s No. 3 on the 30-yard line and pre-game shirts with “Love for Damar 3 .” The Bills will also wear the “3” jersey patch.
On Saturday, the Steelers paid tribute to Hamlin, who hails from the Pittsburgh area, by sending toys, books and teaching supplies to Kelly & Nina’s Daycare, where the player is hosting an annual toy drive.
Fans, players and team owners have also donated to the Chasing M’s Hamlin Foundation, which has raised more than $8.2 million as of Saturday afternoon.
