Rapper Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, better known as AKA, was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in Durban.
Police confirmed that Forbes, 35, and a friend were shot several times while standing on the pavement outside a popular restaurant on Durban’s busy Florida Road on Saturday night.
A third man, believed to be a bodyguard, is understood to have been injured in the shooting, which police say was carried out by three men traveling in two vehicles.
Forbes was apparently hit by six bullets and died at the scene, as well as a second man, who has not been officially identified, in the ambush that happened around 10 p.m.
Forbes allegedly ate dinner at the popular Wish restaurant with a group of friends after having previously spent time at a well-known barber shop in the same complex.
The award-winning rapper is scheduled to perform at a Durban nightclub on Friday.
In a statement released on Twitter, Forbes’ parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes, said they “acknowledge the passing of their beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic death”.
“For us Kieran Jarryd Forbes is a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, most importantly father to the beloved daughter of Cairo. For many he is AKA, Supermega, Bhova and many other names from the love of legions of fans called b. Child we are loved and he gives love in return.
He said he was awaiting more details from the Durban police and asked to be given space to deal with the loss.
“In this sad time, we ask for mercy, space and time for family gatherings to decide the days ahead. We thank you for the love and support we have received so far and ask you to continue to pray and pray to God,” the statement said. .
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that two people were shot dead and a third wounded.
No arrests have been made and police do not know a motive at this time.
“What we can confirm now is that a well-known musician, aged 35, and his bodyguard, said to be aged 34, were shot and killed on Florida Road last night,” he said.
