MANILA, Philippines — PLDT strengthened its semifinal bid after defeating Cignal, 25-23, 25-23, 25-14, in the PVL All-Filipino Conference at the San Juan Arena on Saturday.
Coach Rald Ricafort, however, wants his team to just focus on what’s next.
“I don’t know the situation and we don’t think about it. For us, if we are lucky enough to reach the semis, we will polish whatever we need to polish,” said Ricafort, whose team was led by Jovie Prado with 14 points.
“Choco Mucho will be the last one [game]. We will learn. We don’t think a lot of situations because we are confused, I just get stressed.
PLDT, which went up 5-2, pulled out all the points in the third set with a dominant performance. The High Speed Hitters cruised to a 12-3 advantage which ballooned to 18-4.
HD Spikers took a blow in the second flight after Rachel Anne Daquis landed awkwardly and was carried to the locker room. Fortunately for Cignal, Daquis, who finished with nine points, only had cramps.
That was the running story in the second set as both squads were caught in a stalemate at 8-all. Dell Palomata’s kill sparked PLDT’s 6-2 run to take a 14-10 lead.
Cignal answered with a run of their own to take an 18-15 lead before Mich Morente came on late to deliver a crucial hit. Morente entered the 10th.
Jovie Prado led PLDT with 14 points, and Mean Mendrez added 13.
Roselyn Doria was the second leading scorer for Cignal with 11 points.
