MANILA, Philippines – Jema Galanza looks to be more consistent for Creamline as Alyssa Valdez continues to miss the 2023 All-Filipino Premier Volleyball League Conference with a right knee injury.

After being held to just six points in the season opener, Galanza heated up in the second set to finish with 13 points as Creamline overcame a lackluster performance. Cignal, 25-16, 25-21, 25-15, for its second win on Thursday at the FilOil EcoOil Center in San Juan City.

The do-it-all spiker is looking to bounce back after a poor performance in his season debut.

“As much as possible I have to be more consistent and reduce my mistakes and also the team’s,” Galanza said in Filipino. “We worked hard in training and until now, we applied it in our game.”

“I have to maintain the right mindset while Ate Ly is still out. I need to be a leader on and off the court. As much as possible I don’t want to push myself. I just have to enjoy the game,” he said. “And the leader Ate Ly is still there. He is always there for us during the game to support us.

The former PVL MVP credited his teammates for winning the first two games as he teamed up with Michele Gumabao and Tots Carlos as well as team captain Jia De Guzman.

“I’m not the only one who played well today. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my teammates. We showed good teamwork and we hope to encourage them in the upcoming games,” said Galanza.

THE DANGERS OF CHOCO ARE MANY

Galanza and the Cool Smashers won their third straight against their sister team, Choco Mucho Flying Titans, who fell to 1-1 after losing to Petro Gazz. Angels in straight sets.

Choco Mucho have yet to beat Creamline since 2019 but Galanza says they have to be wary of the Flying Titans who are still under new coach Dante Alinsunurin.

“Right now, they have a strong chemistry because the only change in the line-up is the coach. If they have chemistry, we should form a stronger bond because we have been together longer compared to them,” Galanza said. “We’re just going to apply what we do in practice to our game.”
