MANILA, Philippines—Cignal backed the trio of Chai Troncoso, Ces Molina, and Rachel Anne Daquis to end the 2023 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference with a 29-27, 25-19, 25-16 win over winless Army- Black Mamba on Friday at Philsports Arena.
Despite not playing in the game, the also-ran HD Spikers made sure to end the campaign on a high, sending the Lady Troopers to their 21st loss.
Troncoso led the charge with 16 points. Molina chipped in 15 points built on 12 attacks, two aces, and blocks, while Daquis added 13 markers, including four game-high blocks, on top of 12 digs.
Cignal, which missed the semifinals after making three post-eliminations last year including a Reinforcement Conference Finals appearance, finished with a 3-5 record in sixth place.
“I’m happy and I’m still very grateful to God because we’ve been through so much in this conference. But in the last match we won in straight sets, it feels good,” Cignal coach Shaq Delos Santos said in Filipino. “This will be an additional inspiration for us going into the Invitational.”
Army pushed Cignal to a tight first encounter, resulting in four deuces. But Royse Tubino’s attack was short before Rose Doria’s attack ended first with a kill that set the pace for HD Spikers in taking full control of the last two sets.
The Lady Troopers experienced their second straight conference winless streak as they lost all eight matches, losing 21 in a row dating back to last year’s Invitationals.
Tubino was a bright spot for Army with 14 points and eight receptions.
