Ukraine: Statement by US Ambassador to Ghana Virginia Palmer
February 24th marks one year since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Horrible Russian violence has killed thousands and destroyed entire cities. Here in Ghana, Putin’s war has driven up prices for fertilizer, food, and fuel.
Russia is losing the battle and is desperate to attack schools, hospitals, churches, apartment buildings, and critical infrastructure to determine the heaviest civilian casualties. Russia’s aggression against Ukraine did not start in 2022. This is a continuation of Russia’s illegal seizure of Crimea and parts of Luhansk and Donetsk in 2014.
With its leadership in the United Nations Security Council, Ghana condemned Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
Putin and his supporters believe they may be right – but they are wrong. They lost. Since last year, the US has rallied allies and partners from around the world to stand firm with Ukraine. We cannot allow a small country to be trampled underfoot by its larger neighbor.
We work to ease economic pain and uncertainty. In December, President Biden announced an additional $2.5 billion in food security assistance for Africa, making it more than $11 billion in US humanitarian aid and food security.
If Russia stops fighting and withdraws, the war will end. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine will be finished.
Americans have stood proud of Ukraine. We stand for freedom. We stand for democracy. We stand up against bullies. We are United with Ukraine.
