A number of bank customers, on Friday, took to the main streets of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, to protest the scarcity of new naira notes, which has been the subject of discussion between major cities and towns in Nigeria.
The majority of bank customers who go to withdraw money are in various banks in Ibadan unable to do so.
Many residents of the city lamented the lack of cash in many banks and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) stands. Even Point of Sales (PoS) operators find it difficult to access money.
This has resulted in many redundancies and many businesses have bowed out.
It was gathered that bank customers in Ibadan have found it difficult to withdraw money.
It will be recalled that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has few weeks ago introduced the newly redesigned N200, N500 and N1000 denominations across the country.
The apex bank also directed commercial banks to load Automated Teller Machines, ATMs, with the newly redesigned naira notes.
The CBN also gave January 31, 2023 as the last date for the exchange of old notes before it was extended to February 10.
It has also directed commercial banks to pay customers the new naira notes over the counter.
Some of the areas where customers are currently protesting are Agodi Gate, Idi Ape and Iwo Street.
Protesters set fire to some tires to register their displeasure.
A resident of Gate who was a reporter said that the protestors were unable to withdraw money from the bank.
“Protests are currently underway at Gate and Iwo Road as I speak to you. They are currently burning tires,” he said.
A resident of Iwo road also confirmed that the protest is still ongoing.
“Yes, it is. There are protests here. People are now protesting on Iwo road because they cannot collect money from banks,” he said.
