The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is scheduled to deliver his annual State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution.
Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution mandates the Members of Parliament (MP), the Speaker and the Judiciary to receive the President’s Message on the State of the Nation.
The Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, made the announcement on Friday on the floor of the house when he delivered the Business Statement for the fifth week ending on Friday, March 10.
He urged the MPs to be punctual and sit in the Chamber latest at 9.15am for SONA and advised them not to enter the Chamber with guests.
He said that the motion of thanks to the President for the Message on the State of the Nation will be moved on Thursday, March 9, and the debate will last six days; Thursday, March 9 to Friday, March 17.
In this regard, the mover and seconder of motion will be given 25 minutes to speak; the chairman, ranking member and minister will have 15 minutes; other members, 10 minutes and winding up by the leadership will take 30 minutes.
Mr. Afenyo Markin said that the time allocation is to ensure that many members can be given the opportunity to contribute to the President’s message.
Minister of Health
Before the President’s speech, the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman- Manu, is expected to come to the House of Representatives to inform members of the measures being taken to address the shortage of childhood vaccines in the country on Tuesday, March 7, 2023.
Question
During the week, six ministers are expected to come forward to answer 32 questions.
The ministers are Health; Tenogo; national security; Environment, Science, Technology and innovation; Tourism, Arts and Culture, as well as the minister of roads and highways.
Questions will be made of four urgent and 28 oral.
Among the questions that will be asked is one of the Members of Parliament for South Era, William Okofo-Dateh, on the important steps taken by the Ministry of Health to replace the broken X-ray machine and generator at St Mary’s Hospital in Drobo in the constituency since affecting delivery health, causing the death of patients almost every day.
Questions will also include one by the MP for Krachi West, Helen Adjoa Ntoso, asking the Minister of Energy when the contractor extended the electricity for Yaborae, Nkyenekyene, Cement, Dzilakope, Old Chantai, will return.
