Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara has pardoned 39 convicts convicted of various offenses in Gusau Medium Security in the state.

With the release of the prisoner, Matawalle said the intervention was part of his government’s efforts across sectors in the country.

Represented by the State Attorney General, Alhaji Junaidu Aminu, he said the process started sometime in March this year with the screening of detainees by a committee chaired by the state attorney general.

The governor explained that only inmates with good character were submitted for intervention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 46 inmates were carefully selected by the committee from different categories of sentences, including 46 inmates serving prison terms between six months and 20 years, 11 inmates with life imprisonment and five on death row. .

Of the screened inmates, 30 with sentences ranging from six months to 20 years and nine others with life imprisonment were released through intervention, while five inmates on death row had their sentences reduced to seven years.

The governor urged the affected inmates to use their advantage by showing good character in the community.

Some of the inmates interviewed promised to continue to apply responsible attributes, promising to contribute their quota to the development of the country.
