Publisher PREMIUM TIMES Dapo Olorunyomi on Monday joined the Poynter Institute’s Media Transformation Challenge fellowship as the first African fellow.
The Media Transformation Challenge (MTC) program is a one-year fellowship and leadership program designed for senior news executives.
Mr. Olorunyomi is one of 27 senior executives drawn from various organizations across the globe that make up the 2023 cohort.
Others include Jennifer Joseph and Karen Leo from ABC News, Paul Shanley, Sara Gillesby, David Scott and Julie March from the Associated Press, BBC, Anika Palm from CNN, Larry Graham from The Diversity Pledge Institute, Amanda Zamora from Co-Founder among others.
The fellowship, Mr. Olorunyomi said, “seems to be beneficial for the future that he will be doing at Premium Times and the Center for Innovation and Development of Journalism,” adding that he wants to learn a lot and share the results when he returns.
Throughout the fellowship, participants will identify and address their most pressing business performance challenges with the help of MTC’s trademark tools, concepts, coaches, peer groups and alumni network.
Reflecting on the 2023 cohort, MTC Executive Director Charles Baum said, “I am extremely grateful for this diverse and talented incoming class, and we are excited to begin a new set of MTC journeys.”

Media Transformation Challenge (MTC) Program: A Poynter Institute Executive Fellowship is a one-year fellowship and leadership program designed for senior news executives. Fellows identify and work on the most pressing business performance challenges they face and deliver tangible results with the help of MTC’s trademark tools, concepts, coaches, peer groups, and alumni network. The program has over 350 active alumni with strong relationships with program leadership and coaches.

The MTC began as the Sulzberger Executive Leadership Program at Columbia in 2006-07 under the direction of program architect Douglas K. Smith. Since January 2020, Poynter has been the home of this program, and Charlie Baum is the executive director. Different programs in leadership, networking and methodology are now operating under Sulzberger’s name at Columbia.
Coaches for the 2023 MTC program include Stéphane Mayoux, Robyn Tomlin, Amanda Barrett, Lauren Gustus and Danyelle White.
