Police speak on how 15 naval ratings invaded their facility to attack sergeant

Police in Delta State, south-south Nigeria, have spoken about the March 9 attack on police officers by Nigerian Navy officers who attacked police facilities in the state.

The one-minute, 30-second clip shows the assaulted officer moving around inside the police station, surrounded by his angry colleagues who beg him to remain calm.

His face was swollen with blood and his police uniform was torn.

The police spokesman in the state, Bright Edafe, in a statement Friday, he said 15 naval ratings were involved in the attack of the officer.

He said that the attack was led by the rating, Kevwe Ejaita, who had an altercation the previous day with officers who then came to beat him at the police station.

“DPO Enerhen’s division immediately responded with his men, and the attack was successfully repelled when Kevwe Ejaita, who was the spearhead of the group, was arrested.

“The Naval Authority in Warri when informed of the situation detailed a team of Naval Police personnel to proceed to the Division. The detained Naval Rating was released to the naval authority with a request for necessary disciplinary action. The injured police sergeant was taken to hospital for treatment and then dismissed,” Mr. Edafe, the deputy superintendent of police, said in the statement.

The police in Delta State are cooperating with the naval authorities to prevent this from happening again, the statement said.

The statement said the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Muhammed Ali, condemned the actions of the naval rank and warned that “attacks on police officers in the performance of their legitimate duties by anyone will not be tolerated”.
