Points to consider in leading yourself in the new world of work
In this edition Citi FM/Citi TV Effective Living SeriesThe Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Busara Africa, Taaka Awori, takes us through the journey of taking responsibility for one priority in a professional work environment.
Speaking to the host Bernard Avle, on the topic, “leading ourselves in the new world of work”, the CEO of Busara Afrika expects that, the new world of work will be characterized by uncertainty, job insecurity, remote working hours and hybrids. for companies, not only in Ghana but across the globe.
According to him, a person with a higher position can only lead others, if he can lead himself. “You can’t lead others until you lead yourself,” he said.
He anticipates that the new world of work will be one of turmoil and opportunity, adding that the work environment will be a challenging place but can be a space of opportunity if something is strategic.
The leadership coach listed the following points to consider in order to lead yourself in the workplace in the face of the storm as it moves in 2023.
Turn yourself on: People need to be stable in the office space so that they can face the unexpected turmoil. The principle of mastery is about repositioning yourself, being tenacious, seizing opportunities. People should carry anchors because anchors stabilize people in times of crisis and calm. People can fall on their families, faith and support networks during turmoil. Everyone needs to know the anchor that stabilizes them in a crisis, so they can prioritize.
People need to plug a leak in the boat to deal with stress, uncertainty and anxiety, because people don’t have themselves when they are in a crisis. If this is left unchecked, it can cause people to go down in the workplace. People need to be proactive by investing in their well-being.
Connect: People need to connect in order to reach greater opportunities. This is not the time for people to stay in the corner during business hours. Opportunities come to people with a wide range of quality relationships or communities.
People need to invest time in building relationships. They need to ensure that relationships are strengthened. Constant contact with people to get these opportunities. People should refuse to manage their social capital by managing their economy, so they don’t have a lot of debt. Give more than you keep asking for help. Be generous, start volunteering, and be visible on social media networks.
Get ready for the future: In order for people to take advantage of the opportunities available to them, they must be prepared for the future. Make sure you understand the trends in your sector/profession by reading to stay ahead, whether in engineering, banking, telecommunications, media space, etc. People need to invest in rescaling or upscaling to stay relevant. They need to acquire additional skills in their current role. Get some digital skills in zoom set up etc. Get creative online for free resources to boost yourself. Try staying at a particular job for a while before quitting. Go beyond thinking about job opportunities for job opportunities. Start different job opportunities.
