Former President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his promise to scrap exgratia payments if he becomes President again.
Delivering a speech on political party funding at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) auditorium on Wednesday, March 22, he said: “Let me reiterate that I will abolish ex-gratia payments to members of the Executive and persuade other arms of government to accept the same. Let those who oppose the removal of the state exgratia clearly instead of moving on the contours that do not exist in a failed attempt to undermine this important promise.
He further clarified that he was determined to carry out these actions and others in the past through the implementation of the constitutional review process, the legal challenge that was finally determined late during his tenure “and the general opposition of the NPP to the constitution. review process” can no longer continue with the review implementation stage .
“I invite all of you, including PLTN, to join us in forming a consortium that we are willing to successfully complete the ex-gratia payment.
“I believe that the Independent Emoluments Commission can determine the service conditions of all public officials, from the president to the lowest public officials on the government payroll.
“My brothers and sisters, that will be a true and proper ‘Single Spine’ to replace the current ‘Double Spine Salary System’ – where Article 71 office holders are different from other public sector workers.”
