PlayStation 5 largely out of stock since its launch in November last year, but Sony has managed to sell 4.5 million units in 2020. profit for Q3 2020 was JPY 359.2 billion (approx. Rs. 24,950 crores) compared to JPY 300.1 billion (approximately Rs. 20,834 crores) in Q3 2019.
Sales of PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, software, and everything else in the Games and Network Services segment brought in the highest revenue in the quarter.
Sony, in its financial report for Q3 2020, showed that it sold 4.5 million units of PlayStation 5. This means that since its launch in early November, 4.5 million units of PlayStation 5 were sold in about half a month. In terms of revenue, Sony’s gaming segment which includes consoles, games, and network services brought in JPY 883.2 billion (approximately Rs. 61,323 crores) and was the largest segment in Q3 2020. It was also higher than JPY 632.1 billion ( approximately Rs. 43,884 crores) from Q3 2019.
Out of total revenue of JPY 883.2 billion, game sales brought in JPY 483.6 billion (approx. Rs. 33,573 crores) compared to JPY 347.09 billion (approx. Rs. 24,096 crores) from Q3 last year. Sony also managed to sell 1.4 million units of PlayStation 4 along with 4.5 million units of PlayStation 5. The company’s total revenue increased by 20 percent to JPY 359.2 billion in Q3 2020 compared to Q3 2019.
Sony indicated that despite seeing an increase in game software sales, network service sales, and higher profit margins on the PlayStation 4 hardware, it lost revenue due to costs associated with the launch of the PlayStation 5. It also suffered losses due to the PS5 pricing strategy it called lower than the cost of production.
The PlayStation 5 was only recently launched in India and has been facing stock issues. Sold out minutes after pre-order went live. Sony Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki has reportedly indicated that ramping up PS5 production amid a semiconductor shortage is difficult. However, the company expects to sell more than 7.6 million PS5 consoles by the end of March.
