MANILA, Philippines – Pia Ildefonso skips her second year with Ateneo in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament.
The 5-foot-9 middle blocker on Saturday took to Instagram to announce his decision to sit out the tournament but did not reveal the reason, which appeared to be a personal matter.
“It’s definitely the hardest decision I’ve made. I chose to face, fight, and grow through the battle of life outside the sport I love the most,” wrote Ildefonso.
The daughter of basketball legend Danny Ildefonso, who studied high school at Nazareth School of National University, played her freshman year with the Blue Eagles in the UAAP Season 84 last June, but she was rarely used by coach Oliver Almadro when they finished with bronze.
Ildefonso, 20, played in the Season 85 women’s beach volleyball tournament, placing seventh with one win.
He also played a role in Ateneo’s preseason in the Super Shakey League and V League.
Although he will not play this season, Ildefonso expressed his full support to his teammates.
“God knows how much I love this crowd. Always thank you and always thank you for this team, all the opportunities and blessings,” he said. “Will always be rooting for you. Can’t wait to see you play your heart out this season!”
