The Philippine Football League (PFL) has signaled that it may take action against clubs that will fail to meet lineup requirements before the 2022-2023 season is extended next weekend amid speculation over the future of United City FC (UCFC).
A press release issued on Friday stated that the league will review the team roster forms submitted by clubs to determine whether they can be allowed to participate in the league season that was last played in November.
The form is described as “an important document that states the composition of the team for the upcoming season which is carried out by the remaining transfer window. [which began last Jan. 1].”
“After receiving the team rosters of the participating clubs, the PFL will check the status of the rosters and the clubs if they are deemed eligible to compete this season. The rosters will then be published online through social media,” said the PFL.
“Any club that may fail to submit or meet the required requirements for the team roster form will be dealt with by the league. As the season has ended halfway through, clubs are expected to field their strongest lineups to ensure the highest level of football possible fans enjoy,” added the league.
The PFL announcement appears to be a subtle warning to UCFC, who have dealt with a number of player departures – key figures, in fact – since the transfer window began.
Vital wheels such as Kenshiro Daniels, Mark Hartmann, Anthony Pinthus, Pika Minegishi, and Amirbek Juraboev have left for clubs abroad while Cholo Bugas moved to the Azkals Development Team (ADT).
Team manager Ace Bright also left the club to take up the same position with ADT, fueling further speculation.
United City have yet to announce any signings for departure, with their social media pages inactive since their last post on New Year’s Day.
Talk of financial problems and even a transfer ban given to UCFC is widespread in the local football community and in fan groups on social media. The league has not commented on the rumours.
United City are currently in second place with 24 points, six behind leaders Kaya-Iloilo, but their status remains a question mark.
