Pep Guardiola has urged his Manchester City side to do better, saying they have “no chance” of winning another Premier League title as of now.
The City manager was highly critical of his players’ performance in Thursday’s 4-2 win over Tottenham when they had to fight back from 2-0 down.
“I can’t deny that we are happy, but we are far from the team we used to be,” he said Sky Sports in an interview with Pat Davison.
“Today, we are lucky but that will not change, sooner or later [going] to drop points. [We are missing] passion, fire and desire and to win from one minute.
“The same with the fans, they were silent for 45 minutes. They booed because we lost, not because we played well.
“They booed because we lost, but maybe it’s the same with our team. Maybe we’re too comfortable winning four Premier Leagues in five years and that’s why we… understand.”
Coming after a disappointing Carabao Cup exit at Southampton and – albeit controversially – a derby defeat at Manchester United, alarm bells have been ringing on City’s form.
Guardiola feels there is no spark from his team’s performances and, with Arsenal five points clear at the top of the table going into Sunday’s game, he will want to find it quickly.
He said: “We are still here. We are second in the table, we are not 25 points behind, we are there and there are 57 points left to play.
“But what I’m saying is, [playing] in this way – no chance.
“We have time to recover, we have the FA Cup and the Champions League – and next season – but clubs have to react.
“Arsenal have everything with set-pieces, defensive organization, how to win duels, how to celebrate goals, how they talk, how they look at each other, how they communicate.
“This is football, this is also tactics, and now we don’t have it.
“Sorry to the haters, we’ll be in the history books in the Premier League for what we’ve done. It’s undeniable how well we’ve done.
“But that’s in the past. It’s here now and the fans want a second half [against Tottenham] more often. That’s what we should be looking for.”
City would have trailed the Gunners by eight points after more games had they not engineered a remarkable turnaround against Spurs.
They will now have the chance to move within two points of the leaders before Mikel Arteta’s side next face Manchester United on Sunday. Sky Sportswhen they host Wolves in the evening.
Arsenal’s strong form this season is partly down to the performances of two former City players in Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus, but Guardiola has no regrets about letting them go.
He said, “I always say, ‘Don’t stay when you want to leave’. I wish the best for Gabriel and Oleks.
“He is a very good person and he helped us a lot. I always have great praise and thanks for what he has done for us.
