Peloton is recalling 2.16 million exercise bikes in the US and Canada due to the risk that the seat post could break during use, causing injury.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday it had received 35 reports of seatposts breaking and being removed from bicycles during use. There were 13 reports of injuries from falling off the bike, including broken wrists, cuts and bruises.
This recall involves Peloton bicycles with model number PL01, sold from January 2018 to May 2023.
The product is being recalled in Canada and the United States. The Canadian recall notice, sent on Friday, does not show how many bikes have been sold in Canada, but the government said it has received one reported incident related to disability and no reports of injury.
Peloton says it will provide Canadian customers with free replacement seats that they can install at home.
The recall puts more pressure on Peloton, as the company grapples with demand for fitness equipment amid an uncertain economy.
It is the main recall of four Peloton products in the new year, coming on the heels of one involving pedal bikes and two versions of the company’s treadmill.
