The majority of people killed on Gauteng roads from 1 December 2022 are pedestrians, according to the Gauteng Traffic Police Department (GTPD).
GTPD spokesperson Obed Sibasa, of the 269 fatalities recorded between December 1, 2022 and January 13, 2023, more than half of the number were 144 pedestrians.
“This number is likely to increase when Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula announced road accidents and fatalities during the festive season on Monday.
“The Gauteng road safety promotion warned pedestrians to refrain from unacceptable behavior which includes not walking and crossing the freeway but the tendency of pedestrians to try to misjudge the speed of vehicles,” said Sibasa.
The concern during the festive season is about the behavior of some road users who are again blamed for road accidents.

More worryingly, Sibasa said a person died near the pedestrian bridge.
He said in recent days four pedestrians were killed in a five-day stand on the N1-N12 between the Golden Highway and Lenasia.
“The last recorded fatal pedestrian vehicle accident was in an area known for accidents between Waterworks and Golden Highway which has recorded the highest number of accidents in the province,” said Sibasa.
Meanwhile, more than 3000 people were arrested for various traffic violations.
