MANILA, Philippines – Wayne Selden Jr. expressed sadness at not being able to see action in NLEX’s loss to Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals on Sunday due to a sprained leg.

Selden was left to play the role of cheerleader during the 127-93 defeat that ended the Road Warriors’ campaign at the Smart Araneta Coliseum despite his efforts to try and provide himself over the past few days.

“It was tough,” Selden said of the injury that occurred during Wednesday’s loss to San Miguel Beer at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City. “I tried to run, but I couldn’t run. I wouldn’t be effective if I tried to play.

NLEX was left to play all-Filipino, and it proved that Selden was missed as Ginebra turned their playoff contest into a blowout.

It was a disappointing finish for NLEX, which started the conference with four straight wins under original import Jonathon Simmons.

“I’m ready to face Ginebra with him on the floor,” NLEX coach Frankie Lim said in Filipino. “But this morning, I got a text message from the doctor and he said that Wayne can’t play.”

Selden came as a replacement for Simmons and proved to be good, as seen with a conference average of 31.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 2.4 steals in seven appearances.

But Selden and the Road Warriors went 3-4 during the last elimination period, before the Gin Kings were shown the door on Sunday.

“I really like it here,” Selden said. “I hope I can compete and give myself a chance. But I’m having fun here.”
