MANILA, Philippines–NLEX took a 20-point lead in the opener and stayed in control the rest of the way to a 110-99 win over the hapless Rain or Shine in the PBA Governor’s Cup Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Kevin Alas finished with 28 points while import Wayne Selden Jr. scored 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Road Warriors earned a playoff spot.

And they don’t stop there.

“Actually, we are looking for a place in the Top 4 and the next game is against Terrafirma. We have to win that game and against San Miguel in the last game. So I think if we get one or two, it will be good for us,” said head coach Frankie Glue.

“We are looking at the Top 4, but we are also thankful that we have passed the quarter,” added the mentor, who took the position of Yeng Guiao in the previous conference.

Its imports saddled by hamstring problems, Rain or Shine instead leaned on Rey Nambatac’s 26 points, Gabe Norwood’s 13, and Nick Demusis’ 12. The Painters even threatened to come back at the end, pulling in 104-97 with 1:26 remaining.

Rain or Shine scored 26 points of Rey Nambatac, 13 of Gabe Norwood, and 12 of Nick Demusis and even threatened to come back, pulling 104-97 with 1:26 left.

But Alas, high on the first All-Star selection, was just too much to handle. He unloaded 13 of his total output all in the final frame.

Rain or Shine fell to 2-6 but is still in the bottom of the Top 8. They played Phoenix, then NorthPort, and closed out the playoffs against San Miguel Beer.
