MANILA, Philippines—James Yap turned back the clock with a vintage performance on Sunday night as Rain or Shine lost 105-87 to Meralco in the PBA Governors’ Cup opener.
Yap scored 14 points built off of an impressive jump-shooting performance that thrilled the crowd at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Last played on September 30, 2021, the two-time Most Valuable Player admitted that he was tense throughout the contest.
“I feel like a new guy. I feel like I did in 2004. Nervous. I don’t know if I can still do it,” he said.
“I am very happy to be received by the fans. I am very grateful to them, and of course to coach Yeng (Guiao) for giving me the opportunity to still play basketball,” he added.
A member of the league’s 40 Best Players, the 19-year-old pro also gave back to his constituents in San Juan City, where he is currently also a council member.
Yap’s impressive performance was a sight to behold for all in attendance, including Guiao who felt that the veteran’s performance included some silver linings in the blast.
“I think if there’s a positive side to this loss, it’s James’ game. He can come back, and at least for six, seven minutes, he can count his steps.
“I didn’t expect it,” Yap said of his performance. “I’m just trying to be ready when I’m called to the game.”
Yap’s last match before Sunday night was during Rain or Shine’s quarterfinal match against Magnolia in the 2021 Philippine Cup held in Bacolor, Pampanga.
“I am happy that I can still perform well. The results may not be good since we lost, but I believe we will bounce back,” said the experienced Yap, who has an impressive resume that features seven PBA crowns, including a rare Triple Crown sweep.
The Painters hope to barge into the win column against TNT on Saturday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
