MANILA, Philippines – Veteran guard Mark Barroca still played a key role despite coming off the bench in Magnolia’s big win over rival Barangay Ginebra on Sunday.
Built as a reserve, Barroca led all locals with 21 points with three rebounds and three assists in 31 minutes.
“Me and the coach spoke before the match and he told me that my time and minutes will be adjusted so that I come off the bench. In the first game, I was still adjusting but now, I’m slowly getting into the rhythm. I’m also staying aggressive because in the first two games, we are not aggressive,” he said in Filipino.
The 36-year-old Barroca had an efficient 8-of-12 shooting night and also had two steals to help the Hotshots score 118-88 against the Gin Kings.
“That’s my mentality, I have to defend and contribute to the offense for the second group,” said Barroca.
Barroca scored nine points alone in the second quarter where Magnolia pulled away and led 59-37 at the break.
“I’m very proud of my players because they really took my challenge, especially this guy, from the bench, he gave me energy. It’s good because he’s very motivated because it’s his birthday,” said Magnolia coach Chito Victolero from Barroca.
Victolero also praised Hester, who has led the Hotshots to back-to-back victories since replacing Erik McCree.
“Hester was also a big factor for us. He changed the pace and tempo of our game. Without Ian, at least we now have someone who is a person who creates a lot of opportunities for our little people,” said Victolero.
Hester dominated with 28 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists as Magnolia improved to 2-3.
