PBA: Locals step up as Terrafirma upsets Meralco

MANILA, Philippines – Terrafirma gave Jordan Williams plenty of support and cruised to a 96-88 victory over previously unbeaten Meralco in the PBA Governor’s Cup on Saturday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Juami Tiongson, Eric Camson and Alex Cabagnot came on in the second half after another early surge from Williams as Dyip handed the Bolts their first defeat after a 2-0 start to the conference last season.

The victory, which saw Terrafirma win against Meralco for the first time in seven tries or since the 2019 Philippine Cup, was a good way to atone for Thursday’s 130-115 loss to Converge despite making the competition in the first round.

“Losing the last game was a good experience for us,” coach Johnedel Cardel said in Filipino. “We had a good start, and tried to push harder in the second and third quarters.”

Tiongson poured in a game-high 30 points with six three-pointers, including one that gave Dyip an 86-69 lead in the fourth quarter.

Camson also posted 13 points and 10 rebounds, the last of which was when he got his own shot from the three-point arc and scored an uncontested layup that made it 92-84 for Terrafirma with 26 seconds left that ended the hopes of a late Meralco rally. .

Williams scored 21 of 29 points in the first half to lead Dyip’s good performance which they carried into the final 24 minutes.

Meralco lost in poor fashion despite 29 points and 19 rebounds from import KJ McDaniels.
