MANILA, Philippines–June Mar Fajardo was happy to bounce back from his mistakes in the previous game to play a key role in speeding San Miguel Beer back to the PBA Governor’s Cup.
Fajardo had 27 points and 12 rebounds in a 145-132 win over NorthPort on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena, four days after committing six fouls in San Miguel’s loss at the hands of Converge.
“It’s frustrating,” Fajardo said in Filipino. “But that’s in the past and I have to move on. I’m thankful that I got encouragement from my friends and coaches.
He was held to just seven points and was fouled for the fourth time in the fourth quarter, knocking him out of the game.
Converge coach Aldin Ayo later said this ploy is to make the 6-foot-10 star responsible, which includes having to face rookie center Justin Arana.
“He played well,” Arana said.
Even though San Miguel was able to upset NorthPort and claim its sixth win in seven conference games at the end of the season, there are still issues for Fajardo and company to deal with, especially as the next two games are challenging.
The Beermen take on Barangay Ginebra on Friday and TNT Tropang Giga on Sunday, the teams in the top half of the team standings. Barring at least one benefit, deficiencies in both games could cause serious problems in the title bid.
“We played better as a team [against NorthPort]. But the coach [Jorge Gallent] remind us that we must work on our defense. I hope we can win and get a lot of assists,” he said.
