MANILA, Philippines—Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao feels that good officiating is not enough to get his team out of the PBA Governor’s Cup without a win on Thursday.
But Guiao, who was ejected for two technical fouls in the Elasto Painters’ 112-98 loss at the hands of the undefeated Converge FiberXers at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City, said his consistent calls will put him in a good position to score an upset.
“I’m not saying we can win. Even with good officiating, we will still lose,” Guiao said with a mixture of Filipino words after leaving the Rain or Shine dugout with the coaching staff.
“However, with better officiating, we can get into better positions. I don’t think we can build momentum because we get frustrated with the calls. But [like I said]I don’t think we will still win with good officiating.
Guiao received his first technical of the second quarter for using profane language with 4:53 left in the second quarter before being ejected with more than a minute to go in the third quarter after Santi Santillan was called for an offensive foul as he struggled for position with Converge import Jamaal Franklin.
Referee Mau Orioste slapped the fiery mentor with a second technicality for again making unprintable words, which led to his exit from the contest.
“When Santi wanted to make a seal, [the Converge] the import failed, and it was Santi who called the foul,” Guiao said. “We tried to regain the momentum and you called that.
“But like I said, that’s not a reason to believe that we can win the football. But the only chance to get back in the game is if we can get the call that we deserve. I think we deserve to be a better official.
The Elasto Painters fell to 0-3, with Barangay Commissioner’s Cup champion Ginebra on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Frustration on the phone aside, Guiao said Rain or Shine has a lot to work on.
“Three games ago, I think we improved because of the big loss against Meralco and we made a final decision against TNT,” he said. “I thought we would have gone further in this game, if we had gone in the right direction. But we didn’t.”
