With Gilas Pilipinas aiming to win back the Asian Games (SEA) Games gold medal, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has decided that the season-ending Governor’s Cup will be held soon.
The league kicks off its new conference on Sunday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City, with the majority of eliminations scheduled for five playdates a week.
A champion could be crowned in April before the PBA allows some players to be selected for the regional meet in Cambodia.
Gilas is hungry to maintain its supremacy in an event that used to be considered a cakewalk.
Last year, Gilas suffered a stunning loss to Indonesia for gold, ending their 33-year SEA Games dominance.
Some weeks will see the league hold fewer than five doubleheaders for various reasons.
Only four matches are scheduled for the period from February 22 to 26 because Gilas is in the final window of the Asian Qualifiers of the Fiba World Cup (International Basketball Federation). The national cagers are scheduled to host Lebanon and Jordan at the Philippine Arena.
There will be a one-week break between March 8 and 15 due to the All-Star Weekend which will be hosted by Passi City in Iloilo.
A complete slate of games was released on Friday, with eliminations completed on March 17. INQ
