MANILA, Philippines-San Miguel suffered its first loss in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the hands of Converge on Saturday night, ending the Beermen’s hot start in five games.
But that hardly inspired the confidence of spitfire guard CJ Perez—easily the best local in a 107-103 loss at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
“It’s just one game. We still have a lot and everything is a chance to get back up. It’s going to be a long conference,” said Perez in Filipino after scoring 28 points and five rebounds.
It’s been a long campaign for the venerable club, who are hoping to win their second crown this season after tabbing the Philippine Cup.
As it stands, the Beermen still have games against NorthPort, Barangay Ginebra, TNT, NLEX, and then Rain or Shine, and early wins are enough to put them comfortably in the race for a playoff spot if they encounter any hiccups along the way.
“We have no excuse,” he continued. “We play San Miguel and Converge brands of basketball. They also get free throws.
Perez said he still finds some silver linings in the stunning defeat.
The Beermen stayed close, with Perez himself keeping the FiberXers within arm’s reach until the final minute.
“The consolation is that we can stay close until the end,” he said.
