Parliament boasts of passing more than 1k bills in 3 decades

4^Th The Republican Parliament has passed more than a thousand bills since its inception in 1993.

This is contained in an official statement published on the official Facebook page of the Legislative Building to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 4th Republic.

The bill, according to a Facebook post by the Parliament of Ghana, includes the Right to Information, and the National Identification Authority Act.

“Since the Fourth Republic, Parliament has passed more than 1000 Bills including the Right to Information Act, the National Identification Authority Act, the Interpretation Act, the Food and Drugs Act, the Private Member’s Bill 2020 just to name a few and the repeal of others such as Criminal Law of Libel,” he said adding that there are still many bills to be passed.

The post said after years of military rule, Ghana returned to constitutional rule on January 7, 1993, and the first Parliament of the Fourth Republic was dominated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which won 189 out of 200 seats in Parliament. It includes 16 women.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), which lost the 1992 elections, boycotted the parliament, and therefore did not get a seat in the new parliament. 200 seats increased to 230 in 2006 and 275 in 2013 to date.

The post states that the current Parliament, which is the 8th of the Fourth Republic introduces some interesting dynamics in democratic governance.

It is said that the two main political parties for the first time hold the same number of seats and elements of the result of the hung Parliament.

Give a little background, writing said at the inauguration of Parliament 8, NPP has 137 seats, NDC has 137 seats with one independent member.

He added that out of 275 members, 40 are women who represent the most women.

“This is also the first time that the Speaker of Parliament has no political affiliation with the party of the executive government,” the post added.

He added that citizens are becoming more informed and aware, and actively participating in governance and the constitution. Meanwhile, Parliament said that the 30-year milestone will be celebrated in 2023 with various activities and events.
