Pamela Anderson’s story is known to many – the former Baywatch stars and Playboy covergirls were a pillar of pop culture in the 1990s and 2000s.
But during the Toronto red carpet premiere of her Netflix documentary Pamela: A Love Storywho pulled from the personal archive of the Canadian-American actor, Anderson said that he finally got to the version of events that the public has never heard: he himself.
“I’ve just always been an observer in my life,” Anderson told CBC’s Eli Glasner at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on Tuesday. “I think it’s like seeing people have this life, because it’s already there [maybe] a little different from who I really am.”
“So here we are,” she said. “I put it behind me. The past is over.”
Anderson has had a busy year. release January 31 of Pamela: A Love Story coinciding with the publication of her memoirs, Love, Pamelain which the actor writes about his time in Hollywood and reflects on his traumatic childhood in BC
Her home improvement reality series Garden of Eden Pamela saw Anderson return to his hometown of Ladysmith, BC, to transform his late grandmother’s home – and he recently announced a cooking show, Pamela’s Cooking With Lovewill premiere in 2024.
But Anderson has also seen darker moments, with the release of the FX miniseries Pam & Tommy in February 2022. The Emmy-nominated series starring Lily James and Sebastian Stan dramatized Anderson’s marriage to rockstar Tommy Lee, especially the events that led to the theft and release of the notorious 1996 sex tape, which the actor has long blamed for derailing his career. .

Anderson publicly responded to the miniseries on interview last month with variety magazine, calling it “crushing,” and said the creator still owes him an apology. On Tuesday afternoon, he said the documentary was a matter of setting up a live recording.
“I think it’s very important for me to tell my story, because there’s a lot of little things,” she said.
Anderson’s mission follows the trend of female celebrities like Britney Spears and Janet Jackson who use the platform to reclaim their stories, years after enduring personal struggles and professional exploitation in front of the world.
“I don’t think it’s just women in the public eye, I think it’s women in general,” Anderson said, who is thankful times have changed.
“We smile at a lot of things, but I think it’s very important to appreciate the moment and feel the feelings and move forward, you know, grace and joy, no matter what.”
Anderson’s son supported the project
His son, Brandon Thomas Lee, is a producer of Pamela: A Love Story, accompanied him on the red carpet. Lee and director Ryan White went through Anderson’s personal archives to gather material for the documentary.
“I think it’s been a lifetime of people trying to define him, and I think everyone has a voice in their career and life besides him,” Lee said. He recalls the initial conversation that eventually led to the making of the film.
“I said, ‘Listen, you know, at this point in your life, you still have a lot to do. The time is now, when you still want to go out and work and you still want to get things done. still want to do different projects.’ No one wants to tell the story straight away when they are 90 and not much [of time] to the left.”
Pamela: A Love Story uses personal home videos, diary entries and interviews – as well as archival footage from media appearances – to show different versions of Anderson’s story. The actor said the response was “a wonderful love fest.”
“I’m very grateful, I’m very happy, and if I help someone, then I’m benefiting.”
