The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Oyo State, Michael Lana, has withdrawn from the race to support Governor Seyi Makinde of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 18 gubernatorial election.
Mr. Lana disclosed this at a press conference on Tuesday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The SDP candidate accused his party leader of selling the party to some politicians for their selfish interests.
Following the allegations, Lana said she met with several stakeholders in the party and they all decided to align with the PDP.
He therefore urged his supporters to vote for the PDP governorship candidate.
“We have to sit down and think again and take a decision that will be in the best interest of the neglected and suffering members of the party, the candidates and most of the citizens that we will serve. After some consultation, we have decided that what is best for the country now is to align ourselves with progressive candidates,” he said.
“Therefore, we have decided to tell all our many supporters to vote for Makinde of the PDP on Saturday, March 18, 2023 and ask him to be re-elected as the governor of the state.”
Mr. Lana claimed that he consulted widely before resigning to support the incumbent governor and that the decision was taken together with the House of Assembly candidates.

“During a radio interview recently, I had to tell members of the public that any steps we take will be determined by the decisions of all the candidates, especially the SDP House of Assembly candidate for whom I am the governor’s flag bearer,” he said.
“We have also consulted a lot. We have talked with some national officials of the party and my supporters among the trade unions, traditional rulers, market associations and religious bodies,” he said.

“As you know, in almost every radio interview that I have attended, I have been asked whether, as it has become a habit of this party, I will also resign at the end of the day. Believe that I am in the middle of the members ideologically, and know that I am a person who principle, I always answer in the negative. I strongly believe that the gospel of my problems and ideas will give the citizens the victory they deserve.
