The Minority in Parliament led by its leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, has expressed disgust at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s State of the Union Address delivered today on the floor of Parliament.
Citing some good initiatives by his administration to address the plight of Ghanaians, the President refuted claims of financial mismanagement by his administration.
Dismissing the report on the misuse of the COVID-19 funds, the President told the House that nothing improper was done with the COVID-19 funds by his administration.
“Mr. Speaker, it is important to clearly show that the funds for COVID-19 [COVID funds] they are not misused. It is very important that we do not lose the confidence of the people that the crisis has caused to believe that we have all been abused for personal gain.
“Mr. Speaker, the government is asking for the COVID funds to be audited and I can assure this DPR that there is no dishonesty with the COVID funds. The response of the Minister of Health and Finance on January 23 and 25, 2023. is enough to put to rest the questions from the Auditor-General’s report and I believe that an objective examination of these statements from the Ministry of Health and Finance will justify this conclusion”. he asserted.
In the education sector, the President emphasized; “I feel that progress is being made. The steps taken in education have changed lives and changed the narrative. This year, almost 2 million young people have benefited from the free SHS policy. The prediction that the policy will lead to a Lowering of standards proved to be wide, very wide of the sign; On the contrary, the results in free SHS have shown a systematic improvement. of the free SHS policy.”
The President also spoke about the many achievements of his administration, announcing several infrastructure development projects under his administration.
But the Minority Leader, moved the motion for adjournment after President Nana Addo’s speech, in response the President said, “Our economy is in tatters largely because it is self-inflicted. Your government inflicted on us and failed to act”.
He said many Ghanaians are not happy with the President.
“Mr. President, there is indeed a sense of despair and discontent among our people. Millions of Ghanaians are experiencing unbearable suffering and are in great pain.
He slammed the Akufo-Addo administration on what he believed to be the true state of the country “Ghana’s economy is broke or bankrupt…Mr. President, it’s time for your scores and this is the true state of our nation”.
“Now we cannot repay our debt. Ghana has officially defaulted on our debt since January 2022. Mr. Speaker, but Mr. President, your government has failed to reduce the size of government and public spending. Ghana is witnessing hyper-inflation largely because, Mr. President, your government allowing the Bank of Ghana to print GHC 50 billion for 2022 and another GHC 4 billion in 2023, the first quarter.
“Mr. President, it should be noted that the spending is to finance public spending for overbloated government spending. Our position is that inflation is rising. The level of monetary policy is also at 28 percent. The Ghana cedi has depreciated by 20% in January alone. Mr. President, unemployment is very high in record level and as we speak, Mr. President, the debt level is 40 percent. he added.
