Onne port generates over N242 billion revenue in 2022

Nigerian Customs Service Command Area 2, Port of Onne in Rivers State has generated a total sum of N242,090,629,309.29 in the 2022 fiscal year.

The Overseer, Auwal Muhammad, made the announcement on Thursday in Onne, during the official handover to the newly appointed Overseer, Baba Imam.

Mr Muhammad said the figure represented a 28.3 per cent increase.

Highlighting some of the achievements of the command, Mr Muhammad attributed the success of the administration to the strong synergy between officials and “relevant stakeholders” in the command.

According to him, the Nigerian Customs Service, One port is a revenue-generating command with statutory functions that include anti-smuggling activities and is also a point of export of goods.

“In comparison, when I took over in September 2020, the total revenue of N118 billion was generated by the command, and in 2021, the revenue was good to the tune of N188.6 billion representing more than N54 billion increase generated by the command.

“This continuous increase was made possible after the introduction of a better revenue structure which enabled the command to reach a total amount of N242,090,629,309.29 by 2022,” he said.

The Comptroller also attributes the success so far recorded to aggressive operational activities where all cargoes are subject to 100 per examination unless intervention becomes necessary.

“Our ability to thoroughly inspect containers also helps us prevent the traffic of contraband and unhealthy items, as well as record seizures by warrant.

“The order recorded a total of 51 seizures with a value of duty paid of N1,764,303,008.9 in 2022,” he said.

In response, the new Comptroller pledged to leverage existing cooperation to advance the agency’s mandate.
