On to the next mystery! Just Murder in the Building continued to find resounding success on Hulu by earning a week of renewals after the second season began airing.
“Just Murder in the Building is its true crown jewel. Its cross-generational appeal, the intersection of humor and heart, and its original approach are hallmarks and proofs and [Fogelman], John [Hoffman], Steve [Martin], Martin [Short] and Selena [Gomez]‘s work,” a press release from Hulu Originals and the president of ABC Entertainment Craig Erwich read in July 2022. “We are grateful to be able to continue to tell the story of Charles, Oliver and Mabel to an audience that has repeatedly shown us that they want more of this story.”
The comedy series follows three strangers who bond over their love of true crime. After a mysterious death occurs in a New York City apartment building, Mabel, Oliver and Charles come together to track down the killer.
During season 2, the group finds itself in the middle of another murder – but this time as a suspect. To clear his name, the trio must track down the killer and a mysterious man who appears to taunt them with details from the murder scene.
Ahead of the show’s return in June 2022, the showrunner noted he wants to “up the ante” moving forward.
“I think there’s got to be a lot of things that don’t work, so it’s really scary, and I think there’s going to be a lot of really funny things in season two,” Hoffman said. The Hollywood Reporter in time. “I ended up thinking of this as a show about these three characters and the characters of New York, and breaking down this isolated little world and trying to fight this injustice with people you don’t expect in your world, and [who] you may find yourself struggling for.”
A month later, Martin and Short showed their support for their costar after Gomez did not receive an Emmy nomination. (The duo, for their part, received individual awards for their work on the show.)
“We are very happy with the nominations, not only for us but for the show. We are disappointed that Selena was not nominated because she was very important to our performance,” said Martin. The New York Times in time. Short pointed out that the Disney Channel alum received a nomination as an executive producer for the Hulu series.
