The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), Yaw Owusu has described as “untrue” claims that he has authorized the hacking up of railways in some parts of the country.
This follows news reports that some recalcitrant scrap dealers have been sawing railway tracks in Twifo Nuamakrom in the Central Region and selling them as scraps.
Head of Nuamakrom, Nana Akrofi Koram in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi in Damai FM‘morning show’Cockroaches‘ said the scrap dealers, using gas welding machines and chainsaws to cut sleepers and railway tracks.
“They are cut, stripped and melted down to sell. What’s amazing is that now they do it in broad daylight,” she cried.
According to the scrap dealer, permission has been given to cut the railway tracks.
However, Mr. Yaw Owusu refuted the claim.
Speaking on the same platform on Thursday, he said that the claim was false and that was it “We don’t give permission to anyone to remove the railroad tracks and use them as pieces.”
He also said that someone has been detained so far.
