Hours earlier, Russia had used cruise missiles to launch its fifth major airstrike on Kyiv this month, but none of them hit their targets. The blast shook the city on Tuesday morning and some debris fell, but there were no reports of damage or injuries. The Ukrainian military said it had fired on about 18 “air targets” in Kyiv. At least seven more were fired in other parts of the country, and most were also intercepted, the military said.
In Warsaw, protesters blocked the Russian ambassador, Sergey Andreev, from laying a wreath at a memorial to Soviet soldiers killed in World War II. Last year, he was doused in red liquid by protesters chanting, “Fascists!”
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said at a press conference in Berlin with her Chinese counterpart, Qin Gang, that China “can play an important role in ending the war if it chooses.”
China did not condemn the invasion, and instead grew closer to Russia and increased trade. The new sanctions proposed by Ms. von der Leyen is not targeting any country, he added, “but we expect all countries, and we also expect China, to give the company the appropriate leverage.”
Mr. Qin responded to a question about Ukraine by saying that “simplification and emotionalization are not the solution.” He added, “China also did not cause this war, it is not a party, but it is committed to peace negotiations.”
