The proud defense of the 8-seeded Ole Miss women’s basketball team shut out Gonzaga in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Seattle, leading to a dominating 71-48 win for the Rebels.
Ole Miss held the 9-seed Bulldogs to .293 shooting from the field overall (17 of 58), including 1 of 16 (.063) on 3-point attempts.
Snudda Collins led the Rebels with 15 points. Angel Baker and Madison Scott added 11 points apiece.
Scott also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Ole Miss broke open what had been a close game in the second quarter, outscoring Gonzaga 22-11 to take a 34-21 halftime lead.
The Rebels were never seriously threatened, taking a 59-31 lead after three quarters before rumbling in the fourth quarter.
Ole Miss also held a decisive 50-36 advantage in rebounding, while 10 players on the roster made the scoring column.
Meanwhile, Gonzaga was led by Yvonne Elim with 19 points on 8 of 14 field goals. But the rest of the team was hounded mercilessly by the Ole Miss defense, going a combined 9 for 44 from the field for barely over 20 percent.

Ole Miss (24-8, 11-5 SEC) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Gonzaga’s season is over after being eliminated from the tournament, finishing with an overall record of 28-5.
