The Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport, located along Iperu-lishan road in Ikenne Local Council, Ogun State, yesterday, witnessed its first commercial flight. Speaking at the event, the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, noted that the airport marks the actualization of a dream by former Governor Gbenga Daniel, adding that the development of the airport is in line with the desire of his government to provide an atmosphere conducive to industry. not only a berth in the country, but to record success.

Abiodun, who said the choice of the location would allow easy access from different parts of the country, adding that the Eastern and Northern regions of the country are also accessible from the airport.

The governor, who added that the state is working on a strategy to promote the export of goods and services, noted that the Ogun International Agro Cargo Airport will be critical in achieving this goal.

While noting that the airport is part of an integrated development program aimed at unleashing the potential of the state, he added that his government is also working to start a dry port at Kajola in Ogun Central Senatorial District.

The head of state added that his government is also working on the development of the Olokola Port, stating that he has no doubt that the port will help to decongest the Apapa Port.

“Another complementary transport infrastructure project underway is the construction of a dry port at Kajola in Ogun Central. This dry port will be on the Lagos/Ibadan railway line in the Kajola Free Trade Zone (FTZ), which was also established by Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

“We have also started the process of building the Olokola Port. This will help overcome port congestion and make Apapa Port more efficient. No doubt, this airport will be an alternative airport to the Murtala Muhammad International Airport and has been considered as the non-oil and gas export terminal in the country,” he said. .

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo described the airport as a world-class project worthy of emulation. Osinbajo also disclosed that the Kajola Dry Port will be operational within a few months.

The VP noted that the country has taken great steps to fulfill the dream of the ancestors to have a vibrant, modern and vibrant community, describing the cargo airport as the country’s dream, which is the engine room of the nation’s economy, trade. and business.

“This airport is not only the best in Nigeria but it is a world class airport that you can see. Ogun has always taken great strides to fulfill the dreams of our forefathers, the dreams of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and others, the dreams of a modern and vibrant community go together with peace and prosperity, the dream of Ogun State is the engine room. our nation’s economy and our nation’s trade and business.

“In a few months, Kajola Dry Port will also be operational and I am confident that this airport will transform the entire South West region and become a catalyst for the economic growth and development of our nation and sub-region,” he said.

Osinbajo, who noted that the airport is only an infrastructure to build a dynamic economic zone, said the government is ready to provide facilities for a world-class economic zone.

The Vice President, while noting that the airport will serve the special agro processing zone, recently established through the assistance of the African Development Bank (AfDB), said that the airport is an important tool to fully prepare the country. participation as a serious player in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Abubakar Sirika, in his speech, announced that the airport has a way to connect businesses, noting that the airport is a product of people sitting down to think about what can be done to improve socio-economics. citizen development.

Sirika, who noted that the benefits of the airport will not be seen now, but in the future, adding that the benefits, with the ability to carry cargo from one place to another, are immeasurable.

Former governor and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Olusegun Osoba, who described Governor Abiodun as the actualization of his dream, commended him for not abandoning the projects of his predecessors and believing in continuity.

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, said the airport was meant to provide a route for agricultural products to be exported outside the country, thereby developing the social economy of the country and its people.
