The Health Director of Obuasi East District, Delphine Gborgblovor, stated that infant mortality is still a problem that the Directorate is dealing with.

Speaking at the 2022 Annual Performance review meeting held at Wwase in Obuasi East District, Madam Gborgblovor said despite the small increase in the figures related to still births in 2022, she stressed that her outfit has identified measures to reduce the incidence of stillbirths in the baby. district.

Babies who die after 28 weeks of pregnancy, but before or during birth, are classified as stillbirths.

Almost 2 million babies die every year – one every 16 seconds. More than 40% of all infant deaths occur during childbirth – a loss that could be avoided with better quality and respectful care during childbirth, including regular monitoring and timely access to emergency obstetric care if needed.

The District Health Director said “to tackle this problem, we have expanded home visits, with community health workers receiving training to educate households on the causes and prevention of stillbirths”.

He added that the Member of Parliament for the area, Dr. Patrick Boakye Yiadom, also distributed home visit bags and educational materials for nurses, so that they can visit homes to provide care and education to pregnant and unwell people, as well as sign. against high-risk behavior that can cause stillbirth.

Madam Gborgblovor also advises pregnant women to avoid over-the-counter medicines, especially herbal medicines, which some people believe may be beneficial, without proper research. He asked the media to educate pregnant women not to use non-prescription drugs.

Regarding the prevalence of HIV in the District, the Director of Health said that there is a surge in HIV/AIDS infection rates throughout the country due to lack of awareness about the causes and prevention of the disease.

He encouraged residents of Obuasi Timur to get tested to know their status, and for those who are positive to continue taking medicine.

Miss Gborgblovor again emphasized the importance of protecting oneself, because HIV / VIRUS is still spreading.

He further assured that the District Health Directorate will continue to support health facilities with logistics, training, staffing, and other relevant support to improve health delivery.

The District Health Directorate lists the following as the main achievements for the year 2022;

• Ipt3 coverage has increased from 87.4% to 91.4%
• The district is suspected to be a priority disease with one confirmed case of Monkey pox
• Family Planning Acceptance Rate increased from 24.8% to 27.5%
