The World Obesity Federation is calling on governments to act as it predicts that more than half of the global population will be classified as obese or overweight by 2035.
The new report says more than four billion people will be affected, and rates are rising rapidly among children.
It said almost all of the countries expected to see the biggest increases were low- or middle-income countries in Africa and Asia.
Reasons include trends in dietary preferences towards more processed foods, greater levels of obesity, weaker policies to control food supply and marketing, and health services with fewer resources to assist with weight management and health education.
The federation says the financial cost of obesity will be US$4tn annually by 2035.
