NUGS, EduWatch petition Parliament to uncap GETFund
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called on parliament to abolish the Ghana Education Fund (GETFund).
NUGS stressed that there is a decrease in education funding as a result of the closure of the GETFund.
The student body said this led to the allocation of funds to the Student Loan Trust Fund and other educational institutions.
The National President of NUGS, Dennis Appiah Larbi Ampofo, presented a petition to the Parliamentary Education Committee asking them to reject the proposed 2023 formula for GETFund disbursement.
“Our concern is mainly because of the concern about the reduction of funding for education that comes from the GETFund. Act 947 especially for the GETFund part is the enemy of the progress of education in Ghana. The biggest problem starts in 2023 when we realize that this is not a boardroom discussion anymore. This is a deliberate attempt to deprive students in this country of the funds needed to run the education sector. The necessary funds that should be released to the agency have stopped.
He added, “we stand at a crossroads where the fate of young students is in your hands. First of all, we reject the formula without equivocation. We can only have a pleasant discussion about the future of education when the funds for education are guaranteed by this DPR. We ask you reject the proposed 2023 formula, and move steps to immediately open the GETFund cap. Open the GETFund cap as a communal labor”.
Supporting the group to present the petition, the Executive Director of the Education Think Tank, Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, said the committee must take a decision on Monday, March 20, to save the education sector from collapse.
“Let’s respect that the education fund is for education, it’s simple. Hopefully on Monday the elected committee will make a decision,” he said.
