The NPP to engage in wider consultation after the NEC meeting on the date for the primaries ended in deadlock
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to engage in wider consultations before the date is set for primary and parliamentary elections following a deadlocked National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Thursday, February 2.
The NEC meeting to study and decide the date for the presidential and parliamentary elections ended in a stalemate.
The meeting attended by president Akufo-Addo, the Vice President, the Chief of Staff, some Members of Parliament, and some presidential candidates is expected to set a date for the president and parliament.
However, a bloc within the party pushed for an early congress, while others wanted the party to stick to the constitution to elect a 12-month flag bearer.
After about five hours of deliberation, the meeting ended inconclusively.
Earlier reports indicated that the Council had set November 2023 to elect a presidential candidate, January 2024 to elect a parliamentary candidate for constituencies with sitting NPP MPs and April 2024 for constituencies without NPP MPs.
But the meeting could not come to a final compromise.
