The NPP national council approved the decision to consult more about the date for the primaries
The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has approved the decision of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to engage in broad stakeholder consultation before announcing the date of the presidential and parliamentary elections.
The National Executive Committee meeting planned to set the date and establish modalities for two important internal elections in the party calendar ended inconclusively on Thursday.
Two blocs in the party pushed for an early Congress, while the other called on the party to abide by a constitutional provision that mandates the party choose a presidential candidate 12 months before the primary election.
But the party said another meeting would be called to consider a date.
today [Thursday, February 2, 2023] The meeting that has been attended by the President, Vice President, Chief of Staff, some Members of Parliament and the president is expected to officially set the date for the two remaining elections in the party calendar.
It is also supposed to produce a date to open nominations for two elections.
The much-anticipated meeting was postponed from January 31 to Thursday due to the absence of many members of the Council on the previous date.
Reports related to the Council said the party has set November 2023 to elect its presidential candidate, January 2024 to elect its parliamentary candidate for constituencies with sitting NPP Members of Parliament (MP) and April 2024 for constituencies without NPP MPs.
Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen has announced his intention to contest the NPP flagbearership slot. He will be contesting former Minister of Agriculture, Dr Akoto Afriyie and former Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko who have all announced their intention to contest.
On Wednesday, February 1, former Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituency, Francis Addai-Nimoh officially announced his intention to contest the NPP flag race when nominations opened.
The former legislator said the initial research conducted by the team related to the discussion and advice of some elders of the party, psyched themselves to bring on board professional knowledge and values to retain political power.
