Minister of Communication and Digitization, Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has said that nothing will stop the Akufo-Addo administration from making Ghana a digital enabler, and a place to bridge the digital gap to other African countries using the AfCFTA (African Continental Free Trade Area).
“For all these reasons and more, we have decided in Ghana, as the host and one of the earliest supporters of the AfCFTA, that we will not allow the old excuses of inertia, lack of capacity, resources and solidarity to continue to distract us. moving forward as a continent. As long as Ghana continues to have influence in the affairs of the continent, we are committed to promoting, as aggressively as possible, the use of digital technology as an enabler, catalyst, resource gap bridge, coordination mechanism, field leveler, and connector point in making the AfCFTA experience completely different than anything that has preceded it in the decades-long quest for African economic and political unity.
“That is why through the Trancop policy of this government, we are carefully completing the creation and launch of the AfCFTA Hub platform to generate digital resources for all actors and key stakeholders in Ghana who are involved in one way or another to make AfCFTA a success”.
This was in a speech delivered at the 74th edition of the annual New Year School and Conference by the University of Ghana in Accra on the topic, “Digital Technology Development Readiness for AfCFTA” on Tuesday, January 18, 2023.
Member of Parliament Ablekuma West further expressed concern about the lack of digital prospects among African countries, adding that Africa should take advantage of the opportunities offered by the AfCFTA because it has the easiest way to attract billions of dollars in international investment to build a pan-African platform.
“The extraordinary growth of digital technology throughout the world, and also in Africa, offers a new opportunity to look again at the capacity to deliver. For example, batteries, the price of which has fallen by 97% since 1991, has led to an enormous Greentech revolution in many parts of the world and between only 2017 and 2022, the cost of electronic data storage will decrease by more than 56%.
“Now we have at our fingertips, if we are willing to exercise our minds, all the computational and digital resources we need to solve the many coordination problems that make the implementation of some big plans for the single African market difficult to grasp. . With a common digital platform, now it is easier to optimize maritime transport, aviation and land transport and logistics resources than in the past.
“With a digital business model, it is now easier than ever to attract billions of dollars in international investment to build a pan-African platform. With a digital analytics infrastructure, it is now also easier to mobilize millions of micro traders to explore new sourcing opportunities in every corner of Africa than before,” he added.
